After graduating from film school in Dublin, Damien wrote and directed Thirty Five Aside, a hugely successful short film that won prizes at festivals around the world. In particular it won both the Jury Prize and the Audience Prize at the Clermont Ferrand short film festival, the largest short film festival in the world. The film also earned Damien a Royal Television Society award and the BBC’s New Talent award.
Damien’s first feature film, East is East, about the experiences of a mixed marriage family in Manchester in the 1970’s, got six BAFTA nominations in 2000, ultimately winning the BAFTA for Best British Film, as well as numerous other awards around the world. It was a huge commercial success for FILM 4 in the UK and around the world.
Apart from his work in feature films Damien has directed numerous award winning TV commercials in Ireland and the UK, including the satirical Irish TV show The Savage Eye, which has been described as the most important Irish TV comedy show of a generation.
